Guys I don't know how this happened...

But I think I'm really getting into Smallville again. I'm totally shipping Oliver and Clark Kent and I'm getting plot bunnies where Zodd gets his powers and discovers Clark Kent and uses his powers to try and steal Clark from Oliver...you know stuff like that...I think it helps that the guy they cast for Zodd is HOT. :) And kind of evil but...could maybe pick another destiny. I also really love Tess. I'm even shipping Clark/Lois hardcore on the show. But truly, I think Clark/Oliver makes a lot more sense! they keep having heart to heart talks and wow does Oliver look great!

P.S. my original intention of my post was to ask for fic recs for Oliver/Clark or Clark/Zodd...I looked for archives yesterday but...I didn't have much luck. :(

Please feel free to join [info]commedia; a personal project of mine, aiming to review and analyze comics (and other selected media) that feature DC Comics' The Joker.

It is currently a WIP because I am still going through my 500+ hardcopy!issues collection. I do not download torrents/scans.

I'd like to point out that currently I have two polls up for debate, as can be seen here explaining two routes the asylum's project can take. IE: spoiler free reviews, spoilerific reviews, and whatnot. =) Otherwise, the FAQ and The Rules are already up. The tags/memory post is still a WIP.

I am also open to affiliating with other comic book and/or Batman related asylums, except for RPGs.

An Awkward Moment

Okay, so among the tutors there is me, and there are my two friends, and there are the people we are friendly with. And then there are those for whom we experience, shall we call it, antipathy. Mainly for their lack of ability to do their damn jobs, and to dump work on those around them, ie us.

Well. Tonight at dinner, me'n'my friends and another tutor were having a lovely meal together, good conversation, the rest of the table mostly deserted. We'd finished, and we were just in the mopping up stages--you know, the few minutes before you actually make the effort to stand up and leave.

And just then, who should come along but one of the tutors we (the three of us anyway) are on not-so-good terms with.

And all four of us were like, "Well, I gotta do this," and "Oh, I have a lot of work," and "Hm, well, I'm off to do such and such," etc. And we all stood up and left, abandoning the newly-arrived Unliked Tutor.

It was awkward. And probably very obvious? But on the other hand, we were finished, and we were just about to leave anyway, and we did say hi to her quite personably before we all up and left.

But, heh. Timing! Whatchagonna do.

I need a *sheepish* icon.

Broken Computers and Broken Healthcare

1. Computers.  I would like to say tat my Vista computer problems are easing....but that would be a lie. I did have enough crash free time yesterday to balance our checkbooks/bills in Quicken (all 3 months dating back to when my older computer died). This means that - once again - I am not online or reading mail.

2. Healthcare.  One issue that has been overlooked - until recently - in the healthcare debate is how certain federal laws already give health care insurance companies and employers wide discretion to deny health claims with little or no penalties.

Under ERISA (a law created in the 70s to protect pensions and retirement accounts), health care plans funded by employers face no penalties or liability if the employer hired claims administrators falsely deny a health care claim. In fact, if you were to sue you would have to prove that the claims administrator acted arbitrarily and capriciously. In laymen's terms this means you will need to find a memo that says: "I think we should deny this claim because I think the person is really a donkey in disguise and we don't insure donkeys." The memo that says: "We can deny this claim even if we have objective medical evidence to support it because (a) we were able to find one doctor in the world who agrees with us and (b) this is an ERISA claim.  In fact, thank God this is an ERISA claim 'cause if this were any other claim we'd have to pay it.." Well that memo would not help you win your case. And yes there have been those memos.

Currently 170 million Americans get their health care insurance from employers. Many employers over 5000 workers are  "self funded" - that means the employers pay the claims costs and they hire the United Health Cares and the Kaisers and the other insurance companies to administer the claims (for a transaction fee). The claims  administrators use their own insurance claim guidelines and also negotiate fees with the hospitals and doctors on behalf of everyone - both the insurance carriers own clients and the employees covered under the 'employer plan.' But the money to pay for the employee medical bills comes from the employers. Thus, your claim is subject to pension and retirement laws - not bad faith insurance law.

If you buy health care insurance on the open market (or if your employer does), then it falls under insurance state laws. if the insurance company wrongfully denies your health care claim under state insurance law, you can sue and get penalties and recover for the loss of life. Or recover damages to pay for your loved one's ongoing medical care if the person is injured or made more ill because of the claim denial.

Under ERISA all you get is the value of the health care benefits that were denied. If you're dead....well, no need for that health care.

So when you hear pundits talk about doing away with those pesky state laws that make it so hard for health care insurance companies to do business across state lines ..or pundits talking about changing the laws to make certain that *all* employers  won't be required to abide by state health care insurance laws...they're talking about extending ERISA to privately purchased health care plans.

Check out your employer health care plan and remember... your health care is already being rationed and if you have employer funded health care insurance, well you're already living under a different 'standard of care.' ... More here  and here

Eeee, my OTW travel mug arrived while I was traveling! And even though I am no longer traveling, I am drinking coffee out of it, because it is a) shiny; b) new; c) OTW; and d) bigger than my usual morning coffee mug. All of which make me happy (and functional) this morning.

V.- I found the pilot last night for the V reboot disappointing. It has potential and some characters I liked, but the script was very, very clunky. I'll give it a shot next week, see if it improves any.

Leverage.- I should learn to use DVR now that we got our new box, maybe see the show "live" for once. The first season was my happy place for a few days, as we zipped through the episodes. @nd season has been sometimes *meh*, but I so love Parker and Hardison. OK, and Eliot too.

I haven't seen a single episode of White Collar yet, which makes me a rare specimen in my flist. I will though! I just need to -um- figure out when it's on. This is why people use DVR, yes? I'm so used to downloading stuff, so now that I'm actually seeing my new(ish) shows with Mr. Logovo it means messing with an actual TV.

Last thing. Burn Notice? My husband likes it, I haven't been crazy about it, had seen some S2 episodes with him, but before my trip to Mexico I saw the pilot and a handful of S1 episodes. Wow, it feels like the same thing that happened to Burn Notice happened to Leverage in S2. Sort of losing some of it's kick, which means you (well, more like I) stay because a love of the characters, and sort of stick with it even if the writing is not as fresh. Lesson to self: Don't jump into a show in S2. Always go back.

Hi There.

Hello all,

What a year it's been. All I can seem to think to say is, 'Wow'. Some of these most extraordinary things have happened and I'm not even sure where to begin. It's all happened so fast and the only thing I've realized is how out of touch with things I've become.

Oh, not that I'm old and it's one of those generational gap things, not at all. I'm just...I'm not sure how I can explain it. People in the world today are so different in their views, they seem to think that everything happening is new or some how unique. Bad guys getting away with the loot, politicians acting like children, world gone mad, freedoms being experienced for the very first time, it's all so much to take in.

It's little wonder we're starting to question, well, everything. The saying goes, I think, 'these are the times that try men's souls'. I don't know about men's, but mine is sure feeling a little used. See, I made a little joke. It's what some people do when they're nervous and not quite sure what to say. Guess it just helps to have someone to say it to.

Do you need someone to talk to? I've got a free ear and some cheese cake.

Thanks for listening,
Rose Nylund, [info]ask_rose

A fan fiction writers Nanowrimo in December!

When the crazy of Nano just isn't enough LOL XD

No, seriously, this is a comm where, for the month of December, you work on those fanfics that have been sitting on ff.net, or your desktop (or wherever) for eons that still need to be finished, that you keep meaning to get to, but never have due to writers block, life, etc.

Or, if you have signed up for one of those nifty prompt tables, and never got around to doing anything with them...

Then December is the month to get these fics done :D

So stop by, introduce yourself, pledge to breathe new life into those dusty old unfinished fics :D

Supernatural, Stargate Universe, and Stark Trek IX Recs

Supernatural

This is you, according to me by mediaville (Jared/Jensen) This was HOT.

The Propensities of Good Men by thevinegarworks (Castiel/Dean) INSTANT REC!!! I liked the plot, character voices, and the sex was hot. :)

Stargate Universe

Negative Space by cerebel_fics (Rush/Young) I liked the character voices and imagery.

Star Trek

So Wise We Grow by captanddeastar (Kirk/Spock) INSTANT REC!!! I could not stop reading this story once I started. I LOVED the plot, the character voices, and the humor!

I had a lot of fun reading on Saturday. I also had a blast giving out candy over Halloween. I waited to watch Merlin until after 8:30 my time which is pretty much when we ran out of candy. It was all around a fun day. And now I'm playing catch up on Sunday with homework. I think I would have been done by now but once I started the Star Trek story I had to finish it.

Merlin 2.05/2.06

I'm tired of that dorky music whenever M/A have a slashy scene (sure they have their reasons). So I edited this latest epic M/A scene by using that cheesy A/G and G/L theme.

Wow.

Außerdem gelesen: Unlikely Allies by by Cha Oseye Tempest Thrain (NCIS, Gen, ~2,750). Pre-Canon. Two hours later, they still hadn’t found Krawkowski, and DiNozzo was getting edgy. He also seemed to be getting smarter.

The Time Has Come to Be Gone by [info]jujuberry136 (SPN/Criminal Minds, Gen, ~29,000). *g*
When Aaron Hotchner stepped into the interrogation room to interview one of the FBI’s most wanted unexpectedly apprehended earlier in the afternoon, he never thought the evening would end with bloodshed and rock references.

:D Wheeeeeeeeee!!!! )

Geocities - Fan History Passing

Only a few days past the Geocities shut-down and Google has removed many of the pages from its cache. Wow that was fast. I didn't have time to save some history -- such as the list of the winners of the Sizzle Awards - slash fan fiction awards set up in honor of a fellow fan Marion M. who passed. There is a lot of history that we're losing.....

So in the meantime if you're looking for Geocities site info there are three places to try:

1. Internet Archive (aka the WayBack)
2. Reocities- they have taken as much as they could from Geocities and mirrored it - all you need do is change the www.Geocities to www.Reocities.com. They even have a Firefox plugin that will do it for you.
3. a smaller archive is here: Geocities.ws

and more info on how groups are pooling info here

more reasons to get a Dreamwidth account!

Late last night, two changes were made to the account structure:

* All users (not just paid users) can now post by email.

* Userpic limits have been upped: free users get 15, paid users 100, and premium paid 250.

Note that these beat the pants off what is offered to free LJ accounts. Free IJ accounts have 100 userpics, but cannot post by email. And of course free LJ and IJ accounts have to deal with advertising, and all LJ and IJ users have to face the effect on the site that dependence on advertising implies.

There are two days left to buy a Dreamwidth account at the reduced price points; or you can get a shiny upgraded free account at any time! Just ask me, the [info - site community] dw_codesharing community, the LiveJournal: [info]dreamwidth community, or probably anyone else you know on DW for an invite code.

Top 10 Bowie Songs

 rusty-halo.com

http://rusty-halo.com/wordpress/?p=2879

Top 10 Bowie Songs:

These are my personal favorites, not which songs I think are “objectively best.” Sort of in order, but some are too close to call.

1. Station to Station
This song is dark, beautiful, complex, innovative, and disturbing. Its enveloping atmosphere and progression of emotions captures a sense of the search for life’s meaning, the fear of emptiness and hope for transcendence.

2. Ziggy Stardust
The perfect archetypal rock song for the perfect archetypal rock star.

3. Subterraneans
So beautiful, longing, and sad. Bowie’s a master at capturing this particular emotion; “Subterraneans” is the best example, although…

4. The Bewlay Brothers
Even the Bowie encyclopedia doesn’t seem to quite know what to make of this song’s enigmatic lyrics. Whatever it’s about, the vivid imagery and haunting music are eerie and sad, steeped in a nostalgia for something deeply precious and irrevocably lost. (Plus, Bowie deserves major props for turning that chipmunk vocal effect last seen in “The Laughing Gnome” into something effectively ominous here.)

5. “Heroes”
Specific and universal, ironic and yet deeply moving–”Heroes” is an epic contradiction of a song. (I already raved about it here.)

6. Always Crashing in the Same Car
So much emotion brews beneath the cool surface of this song. It is a mood, a musical landscape of numb disconnection.

7. Alternative Candidate
I can’t believe this jaunty and twisted outtake wasn’t even on the album!

8. Cygnet Committee
Perhaps a bit over the top, but I love the sincerity of this folk epic. Bowie’s impassioned criticism of the corruption of 1960s ideals is a reminder of the substance beneath his style.

9. My Death (July 3, 1973 live version)
This isn’t even a Bowie song, but it ranks in my top ten for the quality of the performance alone.

10. The Man Who Sold the World
Thanks to Nirvana, I grew up with this song; I still adore Kurt Cobain’s raw vocal performance. Bowie’s original is equally sad, with a detached performance that gives its emotion a more distant quality. The lyrics are among his early best.

(Runners up: Life on Mars?, Five Years, Moonage Daydream, Rock N Roll Suicide, Aladdin Sane, Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing, Big Brother, Young Americans, Who Can I Be Now, Stay, Wild is the Wind, A New Career in a New Town, Neukoln, Ashes to Ashes, Ricochet, Loving the Alien, Jump They Say, Outside, I’m Afraid of Americans)

I know my descriptions tend to linger on the angsty aspects of the songs, but a lot what makes them so effective is Bowie’s irony, self-awareness, and sense of the absurd.

The best thing about fandom: we make our own fun!

So http://yuletidetreasure.org/ is made of awesome, and [info - personal] elynross and [info - personal] astolat are made of win, and everyone who participates and puts effort into making the annual winter 'splosion of obscure fandoms' fanfic so amazing is fabulous. This has been obvious to me for a while, LOL. But you know what else is made of awesome? That Yuletide helps people find other people who are into fandoms or mediums which are outside of the scope of Yuletide, because then those people make more awesome and more win and more fabulousness!

\o/

[info - personal] giandujakiss mentioned that it would be so cool if there were a Yuletide analog for a vid exchange, and things have started percolating!

There's a gathering of Bones fans who enjoy rare pairings from the show.

There's discussion of the rarer spinoffs of the Star Wars franchise happening, with a link to the annual spring [info - livejournal.com] wraithsquadron ficathon.

There's information about a Good Omens exchange [info - livejournal.com] go_exchange (signups are already closed, but folks can keep an eye out for the stories and art when they are posted).

Folks are talking about the possibility of a Marvel exchange and/or a Spider-Man exchange.

Moulin Rouge fans are gathering, although I now see that it's been declared Yuletide-eligible this year.

And people are gathering who are interested in a sort of spinoff fest for fandoms that are in themselves obscure but fall under the heading of a larger, Yuletide-ineligible franchise.

Oh! And [info - livejournal.com] maidenjedi specifically mentions: "For anyone who is into a fandom whose source material has ended its run, and is still too large for Yuletide, check out [info - livejournal.com] oldschoolfic. There are challenges and seasonal fic exchanges."

I. Love. Fandom.

And not to forget... [info - community] fandomcalendar is a great place to seek out and to post links to ficathons, fests and other events fannish or of interest to the fan community. I can never remember when which holiday fests' deadlines are this time of year; this year I am expecting only to participate in Yuletide because I have been so burnt out and completely swamped with RL and am so far behind on so many things... sigh.

But!

The morning air smells of autumn leaves, pumpkins and sugar and spice and turned earth, gardens and fields prepared for frost and the sleep of winter, and as the dark time of the year begins, as the shadows grow longer, there are flashes of sparkles in the darkness, glimmering. Yuletide is coming!

Harry Potter, Stargate Atlantis, and Supernatural Recs

Harry Potter

Rapture by Mia Ugly (Harry/Snape) I loved the plot, the character voices, and this was heartbreaking in a way.

Supernatural

The World Ends With You by tangledaria (Gen) I loved the imagery, concept, and this was sad in a way.

every beginning, after all, is nothing but a sequel by __tiana__ (Jared/Jensen) This was sweet and I loved the character voices.

No Hiding Place Down Here by dreamlittleyo (Sam/Dean Dean/OMC) This was very hot and kinky.

Stargate Atlantis

Take It by usomitai (Sheppard/McKay) I liked the plot, it was angsty, and it felt real.
edit: this is just to add that this story does not have a happy ending and it's not really a Sheppard/McKay fall in love type of story. Forgot to add that warning the first time.

In other news, work has been very busy lately! I'm also re-watching a lot of Star Trek the Next Generation, I'd forgotten just how good it is even with the out of date special effects.

SoCal Cat Lovers?

[info - livejournal.com] cathouse_mary is posting about a hoarding situation - and about 29 cats that will probably be taken away and euthanized by tomorrow if something isn't done.

So.

If anybody in the SoCal area is reading this and can possibly provide help, click here for more info.

(note: passing on the link would be welcome too)

Techie advice needed...

OK, I have reached the limit of my Google-fu and my Windows Vista expertise... help?

My Dad has a number of high-quality digital photographs and a music library (of .aac and .mp3 ripped via iTunes) on his Win Vista computer. We're looking for a way to produce photos+music slideshow DVDs which will play in a regular DVD player onto a midsize modern television (for instance, one which is capable of hi-def and/or HDMI-type connections from its peripherals). We're not necessarily looking to burn something of highly shiny Blu-ray type crystal-clarity, but giant pixels and chunkified bleh images are really disappointing on a lovely should-be-clear screen.

Windows Media Center will produce a DVD slideshow using the .mp3 files and the photographs, but the interface is oversimplified to the point of being utterly annoying, and the resulting image quality on the DVD is rather truly awful.

We're poking at Windows DVD Maker which apparently does the same thing, but again, it seems to mangle the image quality, and we're having trouble finding any adjustable settings to make the photos look uncrappy.

There are a bunch of shareware softwares that turn up in a Google search, with prices ranging from $20 to $50, but I have no idea if any of them will really do what we're trying to do.

(At this point, I'm kind of hoping to find a non-Microsoft-software solution that runs on Vista, because I am so annoyed with Microsoft Media Center...)

It's not like we're trying to make songvids or slickly-edited marketing whazzits. We're just trying to make a pretty slideshow out of Dad's gorgeous nature photography with music off some of our favorite CDs, so he can share it with his relatives who don't have computers (or who have tiny craptastic computer monitors but snazy TVs).

There has got to be an easy, relatively painless way to do this. Right? Maybe? Sort of?

In related news, do any of you have any good experiences or horrible war stories about software that bulk-converts .aac files into .mp3 files? It's either that or of course we're facing the daunting task of re-importing most of my folks' music library from CD... bleh. Wish whenever we'd reinstalled iTunes the import default had stuck when we tried to tell it to use .mp3, or that wouldn't be an issue... This issue is solved, thank you [info - personal] delibby for the tip about right-clicking in iTunes to create an MP3 version!

anyone want a Dreamwidth account?

Why might you want a Dreamwidth account? Well, you may be interested in the ethos and ideas behind Dreamwidth Studios. You may like its multiple technical and usability improvements over similar sites, its active involvement with its userbase, or its absolute and unrelenting rejection of advertising. You may like the ease with which it lets you crosspost to and manage multiple journals (and its promise to let you read all your flists in one place, on your dreamroll, though that is not yet implemented). You may even have an unholy passion for sheep!

There are two ways to create a Dreamwidth account: buy one (for as little as $3 for a month, and you can let it lapse to free status after the month ends and still keep it forever) or create one for free using an invite code. Of course, paid accounts have more goodies attached: this page details the differences between free, paid, and premium paid account levels.

If you would like an invite code to create an account for free, I have plenty to give away; just ask! If you prefer not to ask me, there is a codesharing community on Dreamwidth: [info - site community] dw_codesharing, and one on LiveJournal: [info]dreamwidth. If you would like to buy an account and get the extra goodies, note that the we're-in-early-beta discount pricing levels will expire this coming Sunday, November 1! You'll still be able to pay just $3 for a month, but the cost of a year of Paid Account status will increase from $25 to $35, and the cost of a year of Premium Paid Account status will increase from $40 to $50. So if you think you might want to buy a larger chunk of paid time at Dreamwidth, why not create a free account now with a code, spend a few days exploring the system, and still have time to buy at the lower prices before they disappear?
