Holiday Cheer
My wacky Chicago cousins have entered a contest - you write your own holiday song, film or use your own photos and upload the results to Youtube. The winner gets to perform their song on TV.

One of my favorite food blogs
Closet Cooking is one of my favorite cooking blogs. He excels in taking a single ingredient and then finding ways to combine it into different meals over the week.
Butternut squash is coming into season. Here are a few suggestions.
For simpler recipes with less ingredients, I still rely on Rachael Ray with a bit of tweaking (adding one or two more veggies to all of pastas and soups). Like this amazingly sinful, yet simple Chocolate Pots De Creme.

George Lucas Totally Owes Me A Drink
(Star Wars fandom, don't ever say I don't give you pressies.)
On the AO3, there now exist fandom titles for:
Star Wars (Comics)
Star Wars (Video Games)
For all of the book series' various eras, using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_books as a reference: - Star Wars: Sith Era - Various - Star Wars: Rise of Empire Era - Various - Star Wars: Rebellion Era - Various - Star Wars: New Republic Era - Various - Star Wars: New Jedi Order Era - Various - Star Wars: Legacy Era - Various
For the films:
The synonym fandom titles for Star Wars Original Trilogy are currently: # Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi # Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope # Star Wars: A New Hope # SW:ANH # ANH # Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back # Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back # A New Hope # The Empire Strikes Back # Star Wars: Return of the Jedi # Return of the Jedi # SW:RotJ # RotJ # SW:ESB # SW:TESB # ESB
I am currently looking at the 84 works that had been tagged by their authors into the Star Wars fandom to figure out if we can make Star Wars a synonym for Star Wars Original Trilogy temporarily, because currently there is only one work in any of the synonyms of Star Wars Original Trilogy, because that work was tagged into the Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi fandom initially by its author (full disclosure: that was me). All of the existing characters and pairings tags have now been untangled, and the fandom tag Star Wars is now a temporary synonym for Star Wars Original Trilogy.
As soon as we get metatagging capability, Star Wars will be a separate tag which encompasses all of the component Star Wars fandoms under its umbrella, so to speak... all of the movies and expanded universe tie-ins and books and videogames and tv shows and whateverthehellelse... and we'll all be able to breathe a little easier.
The synonym fandom titles for Star Wars Prequel Trilogy are currently: # The Phantom Menace # Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace # Star Wars: The Phantom Menace # Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones # Star Wars (TPM) # Star Wars Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith # Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith # Revenge of the Sith # Star Wars: Attack of the Clones # Attack of the Clones # SW:AotC # AotC # SW:RotS # RotS # SW:TPM - Fandom (this is a slight glitch that we'll have to deal with tomorrow related to when the rake process rakes; there is also currently a freeform tag TPM which should ultimately possibly be a fandom tag synonym instead, but I'm not sure, since it's being used as a timeframe-type freeform, like pre-ANH or pre-TPM) # Phantom Menace
I'm still wrangling character and pairing names, but I think we've got the fandom titles sorted out, and we're working on the character and pairing names for the movies which had already been uploaded into the AO3 are now wrangled. The Expanded Universe character and pairing details will come later. Thank you for your patience as the wranglers wrangulate.

Update on my grandmother
I just got a call saying she died. My sister is going to let me know when the funeral is so I can try and make arrangements to be there.
I think it hasn't quite hit me yet that she's gone.
Edit: I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that's responded. I really appreciate the hugs.

random update time!
Despite having slept better last night than I have in days, I am catastrophically exhausted. This seems vaguely unfair. On the other hand, I know that I would sleep better (and feel better generally) if I got back to the gym, so whining only reminds me that I'm being a slug. I know I used to be able to keep up with work, journals, other fannishness, and meal prep and still find time to work out, but I'm really not sure how past-me did that. I think she used mirrors, or clones or something.
I am slowly uploading my fiction to the Archive of Our Own! I've never used another archive, so I can't say how the AO3 (or AOOO, if you prefer) compares to other archive software, but I can say that I think it's awesome! With the tagging and the relationships between stories and the stuff I've only begun to explore! It's going to take me a while to get everything up there, though. I can tell I'm going to start eagerly looking out for code pushes on the archive the way I eagerly look for them on Dreamwidth and on Thunderbird (of which the next major version is due any day now omgcomeonalready). Seriously, I love it when software I use all the time gets an update, it's like a little present for me.
Tagging on the AO3 is indeed a thing of wonder, but it's a complicated thing of wonder. Thankfully, Zvi has explained tag-wrangling for us beautifully. And jinjur has written tag wrangler RPF fic, because the tag wranglers are just that awesome.
Unrelatedly, because you don't have to be involved with the Organization for Transformative Works to use the Archive it's developing, my OTW committee (Development and Membership) is working on wrapping things up for the year and planning for 2010. I think we had a terrific year, and I've enjoyed being a part of the group, though I never feel I'm doing as much as I should. But I'm excited about some projects for next year! And hey, did you know that WE OWN THE GODDAMN SERVERS?
After posting my thoughts about Supernatural the other day, I did read all the reaction posts I had waiting. Most people on my droll/flist have been pretty negative, and, y'know, I agree with pretty much all of it. (In particular, amalthia linked to an excellent thinky meta post by faye_dartmouth.) But I'm still watching, and even enjoying. Why? Well, I think I'm just not all that invested, so when it fails, I can shrug, instead of feeling betrayed. And I'm still enjoying a lot of good fanfic. But I'm definitely not going to be trying to talking anyone into liking it -- at the same time, I don't mean to talk anyone out of enjoying it! Sigh. I do wish I could kick Kripke's ass hard, because I think he deserves it.
In the category of other TV, we watched the first hour of the new Prisoner without being remotely drawn in, sigh. I suppose we'll get back to it, but what I've read about how to ended does not fill me with the urge to do so. And I've seen about the first three episodes of White Collar and mostly enjoyed it, but am not hooked. I don't think it's gone anywhere yet, and I'm pissed that they apparently jettisoned the cool lesbian-of-color FBI agent. Honestly, a lot of my urge to watch it comes from people squeeing about fic for it.
On the other hand, I'm still enjoying Merlin! Which I would never claim is a genuinely quality dramatic production. But I knew that going in, and I watch it while I'm cooking, and again, there's charming hot fanfic. (And some charming people posting adorably about it.) I wonder how much TV I'd even watch, if there were not fandom and fanfic?
Workwise I'm in pretty good shape these days, except that the author whose book is due back to the press in eight days (and I'll be in Mass. for four of them, for the Thanksgiving holiday) asked if it was too late to substantially reorganize a section of the book. YES, IT IS. THANKS FOR ASKING. But I've simultaneously started on the next book, and I don't think there was a single missing reference in the entire bibliography, which is just a miracle, people. You don't even know how unusual that is what a geek I am the pain of the lonely copyeditor why I'm telling you this.
So I will leave you with news I just saw on researchgrrrl's journal: "The Simpsons's 2010 Hallowe'en special will feature a segment in which Lisa falls madly in love with a vampire boy named Edmund. Cast as the voice of Edmund? Daniel Radcliffe." Heee!

Some bad news for my family
I just heard from my sister that my grandmother on my mom's side of the family has fallen into a coma and it doesn't look good. :( I've known for a few weeks now that my grandmother was dying but I've been kind of trying not to think about it and distract myself because it's hard being thousands of miles away and being unable to do anything beyond calling to say hi.
I'm going to have to look and see if there are any tickets for sell. I get the feeling I'm going to have to fly down to San Antonio sometime this upcoming week or next week. :(
Assuming, I can find an open seat.
I'm going to focus on homework now.

Harry Potter, Star Trek, Merlin, and Supernatural Recs + 1 Meta rec
Supernatural Meta
Supernatural Thoughts by faye_dartmouth I thought faye did an excellent job of detailing a bit of what's happening in SPN. If you're having a blast with season 4 and 5 I do not recommend this meta. For me it appealed because while I still watch the show I still miss season 1 and 2 of SPN and this post did a great job of articulating some of what I miss.
Harry PotterTheft of Assets, Destruction of Property by helenish ( Draco/Neville) INSTANT REC!!!! I could not stop reading once I started! I loved the plot, character voices, and I really loved the ending. :) MerlinThe Knights Have a Thousand Eyes by stakeaclaim INSTANT REC!!! Shadows of Truth by cat_77 ( Gen) I had a blast reading this story. I loved the character voices, the action, plot, and how everyone pulled together. Good adventure story. Different perceptions by gonrie ( Gen) I loved seeing Arthur and Merlin's friendship from multiple povs. Star Trek RebootTerminal Point by posyvanilla ( Kirk/Spock) I liked the plot and character voices. Repeat Offender by seperis ( Kirk/Spock) I really liked the character voices and the plot. SupernaturalA Surprise or Two by dreamlittleyo ( Sam/Dean) This was very hot and her evilSam was perfectly ruthless. Of all of the things I never, ever, ever expected to say in this lifetime...
Because general_jinjur is amazing, and the OTW is amazing, and the AO3 is amazing, and the Wrangulator is amazing, and because everyone who is uploading stories and tagging them is amazing...
Go read:
forma by general_jinjur. It's Tag Wuzzle Wrangler RPF.
I will apparently be cosplaying myself next Escapade, y'all.
(If there is a fanartist in range of my voice who can draw in the style of Nausicaa Valley of the Wind and is willing to do a commission, please let me know.)
(Heck, if any fanartist wants to do something related to this, let general_jinjur know... she says the Wrangulatorverse is open to sharing according to the open-transform statement on her profile, but I'm sure she'd love to hear if you make any derivative work from it!)
And yes, the tag wrangling team is still looking for more volunteers.

Question to my flist?
Is the term Redneck considered offensive? Because I use that term quite loosely describe a lot of guys in the south, especially in Texas and someone pointed out to me recently that it's considered offensive. So it was kind of a surprise to me because I'd always considered it a descriptor for anyone that likes fishing/hunting, beer, and big trucks. And may or may not be uneducated.
EDIT: the masses have spoken! :)
Based on the responses it's safe to conclude that yes using "Redneck" can be offensive so I should only use it with good friends and family, or if I really want to insult someone. Thanks everyone who responded!

Quotations are your friend
I just ran across a story that used apostrophes in the place of quotations. I'm still rather sure that in 99% of the cases quotations are required at the beginning of dialogue and at the end of the dialogue. It's not even something that's easy to fix because you can't just replace all the quotations with apostrophes without messing up the apostrophes in the story. grrrr
I'm normally not a grammar nazi but in this case I'll make an exception. It's ugly formatting and not proper writing!
EDIT: it appears that this type of formatting is common in the UK. I didn't know that, but I do still prefer regular quotes so you don't get sentences that look like this.
(random sentence that I modified)
'They do.' She slipped into the galley, moving soundless on little bare feet. 'I'm hungry.'

OMFG I LOVE FANDOM
The current tag cloud of common tags on AOOO: http://archiveofourown.org/tags
I LOLed loud enough to scare the cats when I spotted that the most commonly-used of the common tags are apparently at this point in the open beta process: Angst and Humor... followed by Alternate Universe and Crossover... followed by Drabble, Drama, Episode Related, First Time, and Romance.
Ah, fandom, never change!!!
Discussion and guides to using the labels and pairings and characters and metadata fields: http://zvi.dreamwidth.org/568475.html http://facetofcathy.dreamwidth.org/39611.html
( Thinky thoughts about my tags of choice... )
That covers all the stories I had uploaded to my outdated websites. Now I'm trawling through my journaling services for the rest of them, that I hadn't gotten around to reformatting yet... once I'm done with that, all the fanfic I've ever finished and posted online anywhere will all be available at http://archiveofourown.org/users/elke_tanzer
*waggles pom-poms at the OTW and the AOOO*
*\o/*
ETA: Holy crap, I had fics squirreled away all over the place. I'm up to over 40 works uploaded now, and there's at least one more I need to figure out how to associate properly with the rest of its universe, and I'm going to be tweaking the tags off and on over the next few days. But mission accomplished this weekend: I feel like I understand the AOOO interface. Yayz. Now to sleep for a few hours before starting the workweek...

Thank heavens for un-startle-able support for beta testers!
I can't believe I just sent the questions I've just sent to AO3 Support asking for help using the archive, because it kicked an error message. Apparently the characters and/or pairings for one of my doppelganger-based moresome non-con fics startled or confused the software.
Ahahaha. Um. Whoops?

(The correct character list is actually properly formatted as "Gaius Baltar, Six", by the way, no matter how many versions of her are manhandling him in the fic.)

Here are two story/art challenge communities for any of you who like to do such things.
First one is story_arc
Everyone has seen the various prompt communities. This one is for the writing/drawing of story arcs, or a multi-chaptered fic/picture series. Using the prompts, you work all of them into a single universe, as series of stories or artwork that relate to each other. Or, alternatively, into a single story, each prompt being used for a single chapter.
To some, that'll be easy. To others, it's a lot more challenging. You get a pick of prompts, and we welcome claims of all types. Pairings, threesomes/moresomes, single people, over all fandoms. Collaborations are welcomed, though we request that both parties join the com.
The second is mix_n_make
Everyone has that song that reminds them of a person, a fandom, a story or art idea just waiting to come forth.
Well, here at Mix n Make, we not only share that feeling, we encourage you to make the image in your brain a reality.
The goal: Make a playlist and write/draw what each song inspires of you. They can be as short as three songs, or as long as you want to make them. Not only can you share your favorite songs, but you can get those bunnies out of your brains and shared with the rest of us.
Come join us, we take all fandoms and original works.

I've just activated an Account as Taz- http://archiveofourown.org/users/Taz -nothing up yet but I'll start on it tonight--probably the Hercules stories first, since most of them have no other home.

Das Wochenende steht im Zeichen von Tee, Kakao und SGA
Nach all der Zeit, die ich geschafft habe, sämtliche Erkältungen vor mir her zu jagen, sitze ich jetzt doch hustend zu Hause. :(
Heute kommt Merlin! Das tröstet mich etwas. Außerdem ist der SGA Big Bang 2009 an den Start gegangen, was sich auf meiner Flist gar nicht übersehen lies. Wheee! Viele lange neue Storys! *g*
Apropos Storys, das Archive Of Our Own is now in Open Beta! *\0/* Wer einen Account haben möchte, einfach dem Link folgen, E-Mail-Adresse angeben und man bekommt einen Code zugeschickt, mit dem man einen Account erstellen kann. ♥
Bei boyxboyger gesehen: Yaoi Ronsō: Discussing Depictions of Male Homosexuality in Japanese Girls' Comics, Gay Comics and Gay Pornography. Ein interessanter Artikel über das Spannungsfeld zwischen Yaoi und Gay Fiction.

~~~~~~
startrek_redux - Star Trek XI (Redux).
The new movie has inspired a resurgence in the flagging genre. Fanfic, fanart, icons, fanmixes, everything your heart can think of is accepted here, so long as it is based in part upon the movie.
alikelyscenario - A Likely Scenario.
Needing inspiration to write? Well, this is a table challenge where we give you a table containing a scenario and five prompts. Once you sign up for one of our 21 tables, you write five drabbles/ficlets/vigenettes/fics for the five prompts based upon the scenario provided. Curious? Come on over and check us out.
Help Save 500,000 Old Growth Trees
The toilet paper we use today is made from old growth trees. There is a campaign to get every family in America to buy at least one roll of recycled toilet paper. Added up, each would would help save 500,000 old growth trees.
Here are reviews of the comfort and quality of recycled toilet paper on the market.
But I am here with an even better suggestion - when your in laws arrive for the Thanksgiving holidays...that's when you deploy the recycled toilet paper. Seriously, it will get used up very quickly and well...it may even cut their visit short. And if you're the ones doing the visiting - well, another excellent reason to keep the visit short. It's a win win for everyone.
So help save old growth trees....and keep those pesky in-laws.... moving along.
*fannish geekgasm*
I have activated my AO3 account, using http://elke-tanzer.dreamwidth.org/ as my OpenID rather than a password. That means I don't have to have a separate password on AO3; instead I can use my Dreamwidth identity to verify that I am who I say I am. ZOMG TECHNOLOGY YAYZ.
More information on the AO3's Open Beta is available in the announcement or in otw_news.
Unrelatedly, and less importantly, I also now have a fannish presence on Google Wave (elke.tanzer at gmail.com).
(Sorry, Google, you're very shiny and wonderful, but you are not Dreamwidth, and you are not OTW. Dreamwidth and OTW each by themselves rock my world, and the two together are like peanut butter and chocolate hot chocolate and Baileys.)
By the way, I think these are the only two things on the planet right now that have any chance of preventing me from obsessively refreshing my fannish email inbox hoping to see my Yuletide assignment. *fidgets*
(Sorry, workplace, but I've given you more than enough of my time and energy and attention this year, so you'll just have to deal with less than my full attention for the rest of the day. This year has sucked in so many ways, and it's high time for some happy.)
FANDOM, I LOVE YOU AND YOUR SHINY TECHNOLOGY!!!
Also? NASA says there's water on the moon.
*twirls everyone everywhere*
ETA later in the evening: And now the real test of AO3... can Elke correctly utilize the story posting interface while being utterly-brainmush-after-work and tipsy from a mojito? Stay tuned...
